My super cute nephew starts preschool today! Cute! He has new shoes and a really cool dinosaur backpack.
My sister-in-law asked me to make a sign for my nephew to hold before his first day. I thought it was a super cute idea. Originally we were thinking of writing it on a chalkboard. I was wandering around the aisles at Michael's and found some chalkboard paint. I then found an unfinished wood sign and decided that would be the perfect DIY chalkboard.
(It was dark so I didn't take any before pictures, sorry!)
The rest of the supplies I had on hand, but were also purchased at Michael's. I painted 2 coats of the chalkboard paint onto the raw wood. Once that dried, I painted the apple and the stars in opposite corners. With the black background, I thought a white outline would help them pop. I freehand painted the white lines to frame it all and make it look complete.
The last step was to rough up the surface with some chalk (to make it look more like a real chalkboard) and write "First Day of Preschool" in white chalk.
I am happy with how it turned out! My middle nephew (age almost 3) said that it was "awesome." The wood is sturdy enough to hold up for many more first days of school. The painted elements will stay put, and the words written in the frame can change each year, for each nephew (I have 3!)
I can't wait to see a picture of him holding it!
